Exploring Nevis

Getting to Nevis via Air

The major international airport is the Robert Bradshaw airport located on the sister island of St.Kitts.  Nevis also has a smaller airport located in Newcastle. Most direct flights from the US, Canada and Europe land in St.Kitts. American Airline, Delta and US Air are the major airlines that travel to St. Kitts from the US.  American has at least two daily flights to St. Kitts while Delta and US Air travel to St. Kitts only on weekends    From St.Kitts you will need to take a passenger ferry that runs regularly between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. and costs $10 USD per person one way.  To avoid overnight in St.Kitts, look for flights that get to St.Kitts by 5 p.m.  A not-so-direct way to get to Nevis is to fly to Puerto Rico, St Martin or Antigua and take a smaller plane directly to Nevis.  From Puerto Rico you can take Seaborne Air or Cape Air.  From St. Martin, you can take Winair (Windward Airways).  From Antigua you can take LIAT (Leeward Island Air Transport).

Required Travel Documents

A valid passport is absolutely necessary.  Also be sure to have at least one other valid government issued identification with your picture. Tip: you may want to consider travel insurance in the event you must cancel your visit at the last moment. American Airline offers travel insurance when you book or you can apply on- line to www.TravelGuard.com.

Island Currency

The official currency of St.Kitts-Nevis is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (ECD).  However, the US dollar and most credit cards are accepted in most restaurants, gift stores and food markets (1USD=2.67 ECD).     For your convenience it is recommended that you carry some USD in small bills for taxi, ferry service and tips.

Transportation Options

The most common way of getting around on Nevis is through taxi, rental car and public bus service. For touring the island or going to specific locations, hiring a taxi is recommended.  For getting to and from the main town (Charlestown) and places in between that are not too far off the main road, public transportation is available throughout the day.  If convenience is important to you, you will want to rent a car or arrange with a private taxi to take you to and from places you want to get to.  To drive on the island you’ll need a 3-month driver’s permit from a local police station which costs $25 USD. You will need to show a valid driver’s license from your country.  Other less frequently used modes of transportation are bicycles, scooters and ATVs.  These can be rented at designated locations on the island.

Dress Code

Casual or dressy casual is the dress code for most occasions.  For formal occasions or dinner at up-scale hotels dressy casual is recommended.  Casual attire is appropriate for all other occasions.  Swimwear and shirtless tops are permissible only on beaches or in the privacy of your residence.
